Been a while...

It's been a while since I've blogged, just been busy at work and honestly my home PC has not been working properly for a few months and I really didn't care. I quite enjoyed the freedom of not being tied down to a computer after I left work, but now I have a few outside of work projects I've taken on and I had to get all the drivers fixed on my PC so that I could get that work done...

I'm working on a site for the UAB Equipment Room, for my old boss, doing it in Django and really doing a few pieces including an online student manager application, an athlete size form, photo gallery, and some video.

The other project is a personal one, working with a good friend developing an online application tracking NFL players, their agents, etc. With charts and ...

SVN. Finally.

So, after launching our first Django application at work, an online Supplemental Application, in a rushed situation, I was finally able to use the first part of this week to move the site's code base to Subversion. Now I feel like a proper developer! In all honesty, I feel a lot better with SVN set-up to help me manage a lot of projects that I'm responsible for at work as the one-man development team.

Frustrations at work

About two months ago at work, we were working to prepare our online Supplemental Application for the 2008-2009 Application Year. The app was built online, in ASP.net, by a company that our school hired to develop it for them. I arranged a meeting with the company (won't name names, but had I wrote this post a month ago I might have) to understand how it worked, and what I needed to do to assist our admissions staff in the process. What I was told is basically, "You're on your own!"

I know nothing of ASP.net, background with PHP, and now working with Python and Django, so it was like French to me. Come to find out that the applications were saved in a database and once a week the person in my position before me would run a .exe that the company created into MS Access ...

Why I hate freelancing, up until now...

Posted by Christopher McComas on December 30, 2008 in the categories CodeIgniter, Freelance, Django. There are 0 comments for this entry.

So, I spent Monday evening developing a proposal for a freelance website for a friend of my uncle's. Put together the package he wanted, and pricing and in the terms asked for 75% of the fee up-front. Why so much? Well, while I enjoy doing freelance since I don't actively look for business, at least not now, I end up doing projects for friends, or friends of friends, which is the worst possible type of client in my experience. They do nothing, but take you for granted, use the "friend" claim to get their way, when I want to tell them, "Why the hell would you want to do that, it's the dumbest thing I've ever heard of, this way would be much better!" Instead I have to bite my tongue, and do it that way.

I recently did a project for a friend, they wanted ...

Another Blog?

Yes, another new blog. I really need to pick something and stick with it. Hopefully this will be that! Work today, then four days off work, in which time I hope to come up with a custom design, simple, but nice.

This is something I threw together in Django, it's not that elaborate, but it will get the job done!

Really not sure what I plan to post, mainly just some random thoughts about work, development, etc. Currently at my day job I do most of my development work with Django, though as someone who came from PHP for some reason I keep feeling a bit of a pull towards CodeIgniter, plus ExpressionEngine is cool as hell and soon, or maybe not soon but down the road, will be written completely in CI. I've developed one major app at work, our online Supplemental Application, and online Letters of ...
